A Dream Come True

Rio Grande Valley native Basilio Mendoza, founder of STIM, is known for his passion for running, helping others and giving back to his community. The idea of organizing a five-city marathon came to him while volunteering at the Boston Marathon’s start line in 2019. He was inspired by the runners and supporters of this massive event. He imagined what it would be like to host a marathon of this magnitude back in the Rio Grande Valley, with its focus on bringing awareness to diabetes and promoting a healthy lifestyle.

Basilio started making connections with Boston marathon organizers, asked for guidance and began his journey towards making his dream come true.  December 2020 would have been South Texas International Marathon’s first opening year but the Pandemic put a stop to those plans.  Fortunately, Basilio’s positive spirit persevered and he pushed forward with his vision.  Through hard work, dedication and the support of our five city public safety departments, we are proud to announce that South Texas International Marathon’s inaugural launch is scheduled for December 2023!

Running For A Mission

The South Texas International Marathon Running Series promotes health and fitness by encouraging people of all ages to get active and make a difference by supporting local charities in our community. A percentage of proceeds from the running series will be donated to RGV Salud y Vida, a program that focuses on providing services to people affected by Type 2 diabetes and to the Rio Grande Valley Cross Country Coaches Association (RGVCCCA) to provide scholarships to youth of the Rio Grande Valley.
